Tufts Athletics Update
November 19, 2020
As we have been communicating to you over the past week, the number of COVID-19 cases requiring isolation and the number of close contacts of cases requiring quarantine have steadily increased on the Medford/Somerville and SMFA campuses.
Today we are sharing an additional step we have taken to try to reduce the spread of the virus. Effective immediately, all athletics practices will be suspended for the remainder of the calendar year. To be clear, strict protocols have been in place during practices, and there is no evidence to suggest the recent rise in cases is tied to athletics. However, due to the rising number of cases, we must take this step to protect our student-athletes, our community, and our host communities.
For-credit physical education classes will continue to be in person with the observation of all protocols, including physical distancing and the wearing of face coverings. These classes will be conducted outdoors whenever the weather permits.
Athletics are a vital part of life at Tufts, and we are disappointed that we must take these actions. We all look forward to a bright and COVID-free future when we can cheer on the Jumbos as they play rival teams and when athletic practice returns to normal. Meanwhile, we ask you to continue to adhere to our recently increased COVID-19 testing frequency and our ongoing health guidance that includes mask wearing, physical distancing, and good hand hygiene.
If you haven’t done so already, or you need to change your departure date, please complete the Fall 2020 Campus Departure Form in SIS. You can access the departure form by clicking the “Housing Portal” under “About Me” in SIS.
